Frequently Asked Questions

What do I wear for dancing?
Something casual you are comfortable to move in, with flat shoes, such as trainers or dance pumps. No kilt is needed.
Do you teach the basic Scottish Country Dancing steps?
Yes, our class instructor teaches and practises all steps.
Do I need to have any experience of Scottish Country Dancing?
No, complete beginners are always welcome. We are a very friendly, helpful class, and dances are walked through first, then called by the class instructor.
Do I have to be LGBTQIA+ to join you?
No, we welcome everyone and you should be comfortable with this.
Do I need to bring a partner to dance with?
No, everyone is willing to dance with anyone in the class.
How do you describe gendered roles for Scottish Country Dances?
Scottish Country Dances have little difference between historically ‘male’ and ‘female’ sides. Most dance steps are identical, with the exception of a small number of holds and turns. Gay Gordons Edinburgh encourages dancers to dance whichever side is their preference. We identify these sides with a rainbow sash (for historically ‘female’ sides) and a tartan sash (for historically ‘male’ sides).
Can I pay week by week, or do I need to commit to a whole term?
You can pay week by week. Classes are £10 per session, or £7 for members. Annual membership can be purchased for £12. Payment is in cash on the night. First night is free!
Can I just turn up the first time, or do you need advance notice?
You can just turn up – no advance notice is needed.
How mobile do I need to be to take part?
Gay Gordons Edinburgh encourages dancers to take part at their own pace. We typically practise fast and slow dances, and members are encouraged to sit out and join in at their own comfort level. Our teaching venue is an accessible building with street-level entrance and no stairs.
